Overview
Spec Ops: The Line is a third person, cover-based shooter developed byDarkside Game Studios and YAGER Development which released on June 26, 2012. While the gameplay should be familiar to anyone who’s played Mass Effect, Gears of War or Army of Two, Spec Ops attempts to put a heavy emphasis on moral choices by placing players in difficult situations with difficult choices to make. Story The game takes place in Dubai, UAE after a devastating series of sandstorms, which continue to alter the environment in unpredictable ways. The player, as Captain Martin Walker of the US Army, and his squad must infiltrate Dubai and locate his former commander Colonel John Konrad, who stayed behind with his squad to help protect the helpless locals and is now missing. What they end up finding is a warzone. Martin Walker will be voiced by the one and only Nolan North. The game’s premise is similar to Apocalypse Now, a film homage to the novelHeart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. In both stories, protagonists must travel deep into hostile territories to retrieve important figures who had gone insane and refused rescue. On the way, they witness horrifying scenes of human depravity, which YAGER alluded to in their description of the game prior to its release: Players will experience ‘The Line’, that razor’s edge known only to men who deal in war. It is the line they cross when death and duty become one and the same. It is the end — of self and sanity — when their duty is done and only they remain.” Much of the story focuses on your two squad-mates, Lugo and Adams, and their reactions to your choices. The game attempts to reflect the impact of your decisions through their interactions with each other and the player during cut-scenes, though they still seem to follow orders just as well in combat scenarios regardless of whether they agree with what they’re doing or not. The game also features “Intel” pickups which fill the player in on certain characters thoughts and reactions to the hellish situation around them with audiologs, journals, and other intelligence. |
